I’ve been Polar Vortexasized and survived

The big Polar Vortex has come and gone (although it is still -1 late Tuesday afternoon). After the last post it snowed and colded all night and the next day the temps dropped some more. While in most other areas the snow stopped we continued to get lake effect snow with the sun shining and the whole works.

That went on all day and into the night. By this morning the winds had died and it finally had stopped leaving the area with about 18 inches of new snow. On the deck rail alone I had more than 12.

The yard has become a winter wonderland and the snow from the deck is as high as the deck and now I can’t shovel anymore off. If the dog was here there would not be any breaking news because there would be no pooping as the snow is too deep.

The plow guy has no place to put any snow and the drive may not clear until July.

So that’s it, the big Polar Vortex could have been a lot worse but hopefully that’s the end of the big storms this year, but I doubt it. So here is one more picture from the big Vortex.

It’s the Polar Vortex, Everyone Panic

We are at the beginning of this event that is being called something I’ve never heard of before so it must be apoplectic. The Polar Vortex. I’ve experienced blizzards, Alberta Clippers,  Nor’easters , cold snaps and snow storms. But I’ve never experienced a polar vortex although I suspect it used to be called “it’s snowing and its fricken cold. ”
We had snow overnight and have got about half of what we are to get with the rest due to show up this afternoon. This first round of snow came with no wind.

As a result the snow is still in the  trees and the area under the trees is not filled in.

So as the day goes on along with more snow the wind is to pick up and that is when we enter into the Polar Vortex.By tonight the temperatures are to be 0 or below with winds upwards of 35 mph creating wind chill of -30 or lower. I took Ashley to Muncie yesterday and it is to be even colder there. In fact Fort Wayne NPR was saying its been since 1985 that they have had a day that has been entirely below 0 and once that part of Indiana goes below zero today sometime today it could be Tuesday before they come out. This is all related to isobars.

This is the forecast map for noon Monday and as you can see there are isobars coming directly from the north pole right to my house. The big L up by Hudson Bay is spinning counterclockwise and sucking north pole are down and handing it off to the L that is at this point over New York and the clockwise turning H over Kansas. This is the Polar Vortex although it looks more like a trough to me. I see also that I’ve got more lake effect coming Monday and at this point the plow guy and I neither have anyplace left to put snow.
By tonight these birds will be holed up in the pine trees hanging on for dear life.

All that said I seem to remember the dreaded week 3 of January as a kid when it was, it seemed, below zero for days, walking to and from school in the quiet crunchy snow and recognizing that it was cold but not that big a deal. Now it’s a Polar Vortex.
